ENEL MONTALTO
The first industrial building in Italy 3D printed in concrete...

For this project, Etesias collaborated with Enel Green Power and the DIST - Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II, taking care of the construction of the first industrial building in Italy printed in 3D in concrete with seismic authorization from the civil engineering department.

This pioneering project saw the construction of a small industrial building and foundations for electrical equipment, part of a substation in our BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) plant inside the "Alessandro Volta" power plant in Montalto di Castro (VT).

The collaboration with the partners of this project was fundamental to integrate skills in the energy sector and in academic research, ensuring its success.

The idea of developing a model using innovative materials arose when Blu Basket president Stefano Mascio launched the challenge in collaboration with Italcementi and Calcestruzzi to design the new Sports Arena in Treviglio. Thanks to Italcementi's expertise in developing cements for 3D printing and the collaboration with ETESIAS, a spin-off of the University of Naples Federico II, a prototype of the structure was created.

  • Adaptive design → The design was developed to adapt to the constraints of 3D printing while remaining faithful to the original concept.
  • Assembly optimization → The prototype was built in segments, designed for easy placement and precise fastening on the support base.
  • Context integration → The structure was designed to blend with existing elements, facilitating installation and the evaluation of its potential in construction applications.

This project explored the potential of 3D printing for sustainable, modular architecture. The goal was to design a 3x3 meter guardian house combining generative design, energy efficiency, and off-site additive manufacturing technologies.

The design followed a generative approach, based on:

  • Optimization of shading to improve thermal comfort
  • Integration of a green façade to enhance sustainability
  • Breakdown of the model for 3D printing and on-site assembly

The components were designed to be printed off-site and then assembled on-site, ensuring high production efficiency and reducing material waste compared to traditional methods.

PROJECT TITLE: ETESIAS

OBJECTIVE: The business plan submitted by ETESIAS aims to provide services focused on the technological innovation of production processes for prefabricated reinforced concrete elements using digital manufacturing technologies through Additive Manufacturing.

FUNDING: The approved project cost amounts to €393,600. The contribution covers 70% of eligible expenses, composed of 80% soft loan and 20% non-repayable grant.

PROJECT TITLE: ETESIAS-3D

OBJECTIVE:The activity proposed by ETESIAS within this project aims to test innovative design-to-fabrication processes for reinforced structural elements using Layered Extrusion techniques (based on Additive Manufacturing) combined with the automated introduction of metal reinforcements. This approach contributes to a radical innovation in conventional prefabrication methods by integrating industrial automation and digital technologies.

In the civil construction sector, traditional building methods (form-based technologies) have remained virtually unchanged since the introduction of concrete. In contrast, Layered Extrusion combined with automated reinforcement placement offers numerous benefits:

  • Reduction of cement and steel usage through topology-optimized structural design
  • Shorter construction times and lower costs thanks to automated processes (eliminating the need for formwork and its disposal)
  • Highly customized and functional designs, including design-for-deconstruction of building components

FUNDING: The approved project cost is €71,429.00. The Campania Region awarded a non-repayable grant of €60,714.65.

OBJECTIVE: The project aims to enhance intellectual property concerning the technology of a reinforced cementitious structure and its production process using 3D printing.

FUNDING: The approved project cost is €94,960.00, fully financed as a 100% non-repayable grant.
